MLC 2006 Compliance: What Ghanaian Employers Need to Know

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006), which Ghana has ratified, sets comprehensive minimum requirements for seafarers' working conditions worldwide. As a GMA-certified recruitment agency, Foss Services Limited operates exclusively within the MLC framework — meaning every placement includes compliant seafarer employment agreements (SEAs), clear wage terms, repatriation guarantees and documented welfare provisions.

Key employer obligations

  • Seafarer Employment Agreement (SEA): A written, MLC-compliant agreement must be in place before the seafarer joins the vessel.
  • Wages and hours: Minimum wages set by the ITF/ILO Joint Maritime Commission apply. Overtime must be calculated and paid correctly.
  • Repatriation: The employer (not the seafarer) bears the cost of repatriation at the end of the contract.
  • Health cover: Sick pay and medical care must be provided for at least 16 weeks from the date of injury or illness.

Foss Services handles all paperwork and documentation on behalf of shipowners engaging Ghanaian seafarers, reducing compliance risk. To discuss crew supply for your vessel, contact our maritime desk at +233 24 486 4773.
